TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) therapy is widely used to help reduce pain. It involves the use of a device that sends small electrical pulses to the body through sticky electrodes placed in strategic pain points. This causes a tingling or buzzing sensation on the skin, while also blocking the transmission of pain signals to the brain. Two theories explain how the TENS Device works: the Gate Control Theory, which states that the electrical impulses interfere with the neural mechanism in the spinal cord that acts as a gate; and the Endorphin Release Theory, which states that the electrical impulses stimulate the production of endorphins, the body’s natural painkiller, without any side effects.
